In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, wise men came from
the east to Jerusalem. They were saying, “Where is HE that is born King of
the Jews? We have seen HIS star in the east and have come to worship
HIM.” When King Herod heard this he was very troubled and all of
Jerusalem with him. He gathered all the priests and scribes together and
demanded they should tell him where Christ should be born. The scribes and
priests told him that the child would be born in Bethlehem of Judaea as
was written by the prophet, “And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art
not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a
Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.” King Herod privately called
the wise men and asked them the time at which the star appeared. He then
sent them to Bethlehem and told them to search diligently for the young
child and when they find HIM to bring him word that he may come and
worship HIM also.
When they had heard the king, they departed
from him and continued following the star which they had seen in the east
and went before them till it came and stood over where the young child
was. When the wise men saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great
joy.
When they came into the house, they saw the
young child with Mary HIS mother, and fell down, and worshipped HIM. They
opened their treasures and presented unto HIM gifts of gold, frankincense,
and myrrh. Being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to
King Herod, they departed into their country another way. When they had
departed from the young child and HIS mother, the angel of the Lord
appeared unto Joseph in a dream saying, “Arise and take the young child
and HIS mother and flee into Egypt, and be there until I bring thee word:
for Herod will seek the young child to destroy HIM. Joseph then arose and
took the young child and HIS mother by night and departed for Egypt. They
stayed in Egypt until the death of King Herod that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt have I
called my son”.
When King Herod saw that the wise men did not
return and he felt that they had insulted him, he was very wroth, and sent
forth, and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and all the
coasts thereof. He slew all the children from two years old and under
according to the time that he had inquired of the wise men. Then was
fulfilled that which was spoken of by the prophet Jeremy saying, “Rachel
weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they were
not.”
When King Herod died, an angel of the Lord
appeared to Joseph while in Egypt in a dream saying, “Arise and take the
young child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are
dead which sought the young child’s life. Joseph arose and took the young
child and HIS mother, and came into the land of Israel, but when he heard
that Archelaus, the son of Herod, reigned in Judaea in his father’s place,
he was afraid to take the child there. Being warned of GOD in a dream,
Joseph turned aside into parts of Galilee. They came and dwelt in the
city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the
prophets, HE shall be called a Nazarene.
